In this Leadership Moments video, I’ll outline the steps for executing the Magic Move for achieving your top objectives, discuss the importance of each step, and explain how to effectively approach the process.

In our executive coaching practice one question keeps recurring with clients across America and abroad: How can I, as a leader, better align my people to ensure that we achieve the results we promise the organization?

Critical question? You bet it is.

Our direct answer? You need to execute the “Magic Move.”

What is the Magic Move? This is what we will be discussing today.

This magic move is not the one that pertains to your golf swing, though it does involve proper alignment in order to achieve your desired results – and this one is even easier than perfecting your golf swing.

The Magic Move Step by Step:

1.)    Write down and define the top 3 objectives for each of your direct reports

2.)    Ask each of your direct reports to list and define what they think their top 3 objectives are

3.)    Meet individually with each of your reports to clarify these important objectives

Remember as you employ the Magic Move that there is no such thing as 100% alignment. I know your expectations are high as you have your key success indicators and pip goals in place. However, as important as these management tools are for communicating and cascading your objectives, the practical reality is that leaders set their objectives – and then forget their objectives. The probability is that the same thing will happen in your case.

It is also important that you establish a way to track and steer the process from the start. This should be a simple process, and we recommend that you simply commit to doing the Magic Move at least once a month.

If you are truly interested in aligning your results with your people in order to ensure that you ultimately deliver on your promises to your organization, our suggestion is that you use the Magic Move.
